Deuterman Law Group celebrates third year as a NC Family Friendly Company

(Greensboro, N.C) – For the third year in a row, The Deuterman Law Group has been selected as one of North Carolina’s most family-friendly workplaces by Carolina Parent.

The Greensboro injury law firm with a long-standing reputation for putting people first made the magazine publisher’s 2009 N.C. Family-Friendly 50 list. The award recognizes companies statewide that offer unique benefits and incentives that help working parents balance their professional and family obligations.

Carolina Parenting, which publishes Piedmont Parent and Carolina Parent magazines, has been compiling the list for the last 10 years, and competition has grown so intense that this year, the number of winners was expanded from 40 to 50.

In many ways, the Family Friendly 50 list is the ultimate employee satisfaction survey. Companies are nominated by their employees, and follow-up surveys are sent to finalists. The magazines’ editorial staff ranks the applications, and a committee of judges determines the winners.

“I’d personally like to thank our employees for again nominating the Deuterman Law Group for the Family-Friendly 50 list,” said Daniel L. Deuterman, president and founding attorney. “We’ve worked very hard to make this firm a rewarding and enjoyable place to work. We firmly believe that if you treat people well – the way that you would want to be treated – and do things for the right reasons, then success will follow. We’ve made this a priority within our corporate culture, and our employees have rewarded us by treating our clients with the same consideration and delivering exemplary customer service every day.”

Other companies on Carolina Parenting’s 2009 N.C. Family-Friendly 50 list include American Express, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Bank of America, Cisco, Kindermusik, Rex Healthcare, United Guaranty and Vietri. A full list is online at www.piedmontparent.com

The Deuterman Law Group puts people first – both clients and employees – and that’s why the firm has been so successful in its first six years. Founders Dan and Dawne Deuterman realize that their careers are only part of what defines people. They realize that employees have many other roles: parent, husband, wife, community activist, volunteer, athlete, artist, caregiver and the list goes on. Employees deserve time to flourish in all their varied roles. The firm’s corporate culture and flexible working environment not only accommodates balance but also encourages it.

The Deuterman Law Group sends the message that families matter through flexible working arrangements, benefits and policies that allow employees to strike that elusive balance in their personal and professional lives.

Many of the company’s 30 employees are parents, and they’re never hassled if they must miss work for a school engagement or to stay home with a sick child. Instead, the Deuterman Law Group makes it possible for these employees to plan their work hours around family obligations, and to work from home, if and when necessary.

It’s evident in everything that the Deuterman Law Group does that the company cares about its employees. The firm celebrates employee birthdays, marriages and births with parties and showers. The firm holds an annual holiday party that is open to all employees, as well as a number of family events throughout the year.

This fall, all employees (and their spouses) will be traveling to New York City for a long weekend as a reward for meeting aggressive customer satisfaction goals. The firm is paying all trip expenses for employees.

In addition, the Deuterman Law Group invests heavily in personal and professional development of its staff. Employees are encouraged to seek continuing education opportunities, beyond what is required of the legal field. For instance, the company sent its office manager to the Center for Creative Leadership this year. Other employees have applied for marketing fellowships at Harvard University and an HR development program and UNC’s Kenan-Flagler School of Business.

On the personal development front, the Deuterman Law Group offers a number of optional, free courses to employees during work hours. Five wellness seminars are scheduled throughout 2009, with more planned in 2010. Past sessions have focused on alternative healing and stress reduction through Reiki and meditation. The company also is considering offering training in first aid and CPR, depending on interest. The Deutermans recognize that employees have busy lives and they may have trouble fitting in sessions like these during nonworking hours. So, they make the classes available to employees at work.

Other family friendly benefits include: elder care resources, parenting and family support programs, paid maternity and adoption leave that extends beyond government mandates, flexible work schedules for new mothers, paid paternity leave, paid time off for volunteer work and concierge services.
